How to Measure Circle Foam

You only need two measurements when ordering circle foam: the diameter and thickness.

Diameter – Measure in a straight line across the widest part of the circle, from one edge to the opposite edge through the centre.

Thickness – Measure the depth of foam required.

You can provide your measurements in inches or centimetres when ordering.

If you’re replacing old foam that has become compressed or lost its shape, it’s usually better to measure the cushion cover rather than relying on the old foam.

TIP: When measuring a round cushion cover, measure from seam to seam through the centre of the cover.

If you’re unsure, take a look at our How to Measure Foam guide. This illustrates how to measure a standard cushion, so simply apply the same method to the circle.

If you are replacing a circular cushion cover, a good way to find the widest part is to fold the circle section precisely in half; the straight edge is the diameter.

If you are not confident about measuring, please get in touch. We want you to get the perfect piece of circle foam in the exact size you want.

Choosing the Right Foam for a Round Cushion

F.C. Hancox has been supplying foam for decades, so we know a thing or two when it comes to choosing the right foam. There isn’t one type of foam that’s right for every circular cushion.

The best choice of foam depends on what the foam will be used for, how frequently it will be used and whether you prefer a softer or firmer feel.

We stock a variety of quality, UK-manufactured foams suitable for all types of application. Here are some suggestions:

Everyday Seating

For round seat cushions, dining chairs, stools and other regularly used seating, our range of CMF foams provide a good combination of comfort, support and durability.

Softer and Luxury Seating

Reflex foam is a dense but softer foam and can be a good choice where you’re looking for a more luxurious feel. Reflex foam is a great option where support is needed.

Hard-wearing and Commercial Seating

For demanding commercial applications, especially where there will be heavy use, our chip foam provides a firm, durable and economical option.

If you’re not sure which foam to choose, please give the F.C. Hancox team a call and we’ll be happy to advise you.

What Thickness Should Circle Foam Be?

The right thickness depends on what your round foam is being used for and personal comfort choices.

If you’re replacing the foam inside an existing round cushion, the cushion cover will normally determine the thickness required.

For a new seating or upholstery project, you’ll need to consider the type of seat, the support underneath it and how much cushioning you want.

Thickness isn’t the only consideration. The firmness and density of the foam will also affect how supportive and comfortable the finished cushion feels.

If you’re unsure about the most suitable thickness or foam type for your project, contact us before ordering and we’ll be happy to help.

Replacement Foam for Round Cushions

If a round cushion has become flat, saggy or uncomfortable, you don’t necessarily need to replace the entire cushion.

Providing the existing cover is still in good condition, and can be easily removed or opened and resewn, new circle cushion foam can be cut to fit inside it. This is a straightforward way of restoring the shape, comfort and support of round seat cushions, stools and other upholstered furniture.

For an even fuller finish, you can also add polyester wrap. Additionally, stockinette can be added to your foam; this helps to make fitting your new foam into its cover easier. Find out more in our Polyester Wrap & Stockinette guide.

Other Foam Shapes Cut to Size

Not every cushion is perfectly round. F.C. Hancox has the experience and cutting technology to cut foam to a wide range of different shapes and sizes.

Depending on your project, you may also need:

  • Square and Rectangle Foam
  • Bullnose and Curved Cushions
  • Rounded Chair Foam
  • T-Shaped Foam
  • L-Shaped Foam

We cut all our foam in-house, ensuring the foam is cut to the measurements that you supply. You can view all the available options on our Foam Shapes page. If you can’t find the shape you want, contact us and we’ll advise you on the best way to order.

Circle Foam FAQs

Can you cut foam into a circle?

Yes. Enter the diameter and thickness you require as shown on the diagram and our experienced, in-house technicians will cut the foam to your measurements.

How do I measure foam for a round cushion?

Measure straight across the widest part of the cushion, through its centre, to find the diameter. You’ll also need to measure the required thickness.

If you’re replacing worn-out foam that has become compressed or misshapen, measure the cushion cover rather than the old foam. Using the cover’s stitching, measure from seam to seam to find the diameter and thickness.

What is the best foam for a round seat cushion?

For regularly used seating, we generally recommend a durable seating foam such as our CMF foam range. However, the best foam will depend on the application and personal preference, for example, whether you prefer a softer or firmer seat. F.C. Hancox’s staff are always happy to help you choose the perfect foam for the purpose it is being used.

Can I replace the foam inside a round cushion?

Yes. Whilst you can measure the old foam, if the foam is flattened and misshapen, use the cover to find the dimensions required. If the cushion cover is still in good condition and can be easily removed, or opened and resewn, replacing worn-out foam is an easy way to restore your round cushion’s comfort, support and appearance.

Can you cut circle foam to any diameter?

F.C. Hancox’s circle foam is cut to the measurements that you provide. Enter the diameter and thickness required into the form, then choose a foam type to get an instant price for your new circle foam.

Can I choose different types of foam?

Yes. We sell a wide range of foam types suitable for different applications. If you’re unsure which one you need, contact us and we’ll help you choose the best foam for your project.

What if the shape I need isn’t a perfect circle?

We offer a range of other Foam Shapes. Check our page of shapes and, if none match the shape you need, contact us with the details of your project and we’ll advise you on the best option.
