Why use spray adhesive on foam?
When replacing the foam in cushions with loose covers, the foam and fabric are kept separate allowing covers to be removed. However, there are many applications in upholstery where it is better that fabrics and foam are stuck together. This is often done to keep the desired shape and provide softness and comfort. Using Spray adhesive for foam provides a good, even spread of the glue meaning the fabric doesn’t become soaked which can lead to warping. These adhesives dry quickly and with a clear finish, which is especially important where fabrics are concerned. Spray is also a good product to use in situations such as repairing damaged upholstery or attaching trims. A repair carried out this way can be invisible.
For sofa arms, backs and fixed cushions, a professional upholsterer usually needs to be engaged. But keen DIYers can utilise spray adhesive for foam for all kinds of foam applications. Applications for spray adhesive for foam
There are many projects where spray adhesive can be used. Spray adhesive for foam is used in upholstery to bond together fabric and foam, and indeed foam to foam. How to use spray adhesive for foam
There are a good number of tutorials online that demonstrate how to use spray adhesive for foam. These will explain how long you need to leave the adhesive to ‘cure’ before attaching the foam and fabric together. This time is important to the success of the project.
Other instructions include how to prepare the surfaces of the materials to be joined. It is important to carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions as products may vary. Common directions include:
- Ensure that the room you are working in is well ventilated
- Prepare /protect the surface where you will be working
- Lay the foam and fabric, or two pieces side by side as flat as you can
- Make sure the surfaces to be stuck together are clean and dry and free of dust
- Hold the spray at 90° to the surface and spray evenly
- Spray one surface horizontally and the other vertically
- Make sure you spray to the edges
- Allow to ‘cure’ for the time given in the directions
- Carefully press the two pieces together
- Leave to dry for the time given
The adhesive needs to be easy to apply, fast-drying yet have a good ‘open time’ – the time after the adhesive has been applied so the materials being bonded together can be manoeuvred.
TOP TIP: Allow enough time! Before beginning, make a note of the curing time and drying time. These times will differ from project to project and depending upon the adhesive.
What is the difference between drying and curing?
With some adhesives, including spray adhesive for foam, there will be a ‘curing’ time and a ‘drying’ time. These will vary, depending upon the items being bonded and the adhesive type. The product’s instructions will tell you how and when to press together the items being glued, then how long to leave them to dry.
Curing – curing is allowing time for an adhesive to reach its best condition to achieve a permanent bond. Some adhesives need to be left overnight, whilst some are instant. For best results read the instructions and follow the cure time.
Drying – not all adhesives dry instantly after bonding and are best left to fully dry before continuing with the project. For best results read the instructions and follow the drying time.
