Dog Bed Foam

Dog Bed Foam

We get so many calls from loving dog owners requiring dog bed foam. What foam you need is down to yours and your dog’s requirements. If you are looking for standard foam cut to size then the SF33/190 would suit your needs, but if you are looking for something to support an elderly dog, or one with joint problems we would suggest going for  Reflex 400H foam, this would be suitable as it will still give your dog the support he or she needs with a bit of added comfort. We have had customers in the past order Memory foam, this is fine for a dog bed but is the slightly more expensive option.

If you have any further questions on dog bed foam, or would like to discuss your requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01202 486956 or use our ‘Ask a Question’ form on the left and we will get back to you as soon as we can. If you’re happy to order, please choose a shape that closely resembles the shape you require and follow the three simple steps.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Bed Foam

What is the best foam for a dog bed?

The best foam depends on your dog’s size, age and any health conditions. For everyday dog beds, SF33/190 foam is a popular choice because it provides firm, durable support at an affordable price. For larger breeds, senior dogs or dogs with arthritis, we generally recommend Reflex 400H foam, which offers greater resilience and improved pressure distribution. If you’re looking for maximum comfort, or for orthopaedic use, you can also choose a layer of  Vasco 40 Memory Foam as part of your dog bed. F.C. Hancox’s   friendly staff are always happy to help you to choose the best foam for your dog’s bed.

Is memory foam good for dogs?

Yes. Memory foam can help reduce pressure on joints by moulding to your dog’s body. It is particularly beneficial for older dogs, dogs recovering from injury or breeds that are prone to joint problems. Many customers choose a memory foam layer over a supportive Reflex foam base to combine comfort with long-lasting support. This is called laminating. We do not charge extra for laminating two foams in this way.

What foam is best for an elderly dog?

For older dogs, we usually recommend Reflex 400H foam because it offers excellent support while remaining comfortable. It helps distribute your dog’s weight more evenly, reducing pressure on hips, elbows and joints. For dogs needing additional cushioning, a layer of Vasco 40 Memory Foam can provide even greater comfort.

Can dog bed foam be cut to size?

Yes. We can cut dog bed foam to any size or shape. Whether you need a simple rectangle, an oval cushion or a completely bespoke shape, simply provide your measurements and we’ll cut the foam to your exact requirements. Just select the shape nearest to your requirements on our foam-cut-to-size page and follow the simple instructions.

What thickness foam should I choose for a dog bed?

The ideal thickness depends on your dog’s size and the type of bed.

  • Small dogs: around 50mm
  • Medium dogs: 75mm
  • Large dogs: 100mm
  • Giant breeds or elderly dogs: 100-150mm

If you’re unsure which thickness is best, we’re always happy to advise, please get in touch.

How long does dog bed foam last?

A high-quality foam dog bed can last many years when the correct foam grade is selected. Higher density foams such as Reflex 400H are designed to retain their shape and support for significantly longer than lower quality foams, even with daily use.

Can I replace the foam in my dog’s existing bed?

Absolutely. Replacing just the foam is often far more cost-effective than buying a brand-new dog bed. If your existing cover is still in good condition and easily removed, simply order replacement foam cut to the same dimensions and your dog will enjoy a bed that feels like new. On our foam-cut-to-size page, select the nearest shape, click and add dimensions. To find the correct dimensions measure the cover between the stitch lines. You can get help on measuring on our How to Measure Foam page. You then select your foam and order. Your new foam will be with you very soon.

Is firmer foam better for dogs?

Not always. While very soft foam can lose support over time, foam that is too firm may be uncomfortable. Most dogs benefit from a medium to firm support foam that provides comfort while keeping their body properly supported. The best option depends on your dog’s weight, breed and sleeping habits.

Which foam is best for large dogs?

Larger dogs place much greater pressure on the foam, so a higher density product is recommended. We generally suggest Reflex 400H foam because it offers excellent durability, maintains its shape and provides the support needed for heavier breeds. If you are unsure about foam selection, get in touch, we’re happy to help.

Can I order foam for a custom-shaped dog bed?

Yes. We regularly cut foam to irregular shapes for custom dog beds that will fit perfectly. If your dog bed isn’t a standard shape, simply choose the closest shape on our Foam Cut to Size page, or provide us with a template and dimensions. If you are at all unsure, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Does dog bed foam lose its shape?

Quality foam should maintain its shape for many years. Premium foams such as SF33/190 and Reflex 400H have been selected because they provide long-lasting resilience and recover well after repeated use, making them ideal for everyday dog beds.

Which foam do F.C. Hancox recommend for dog beds?

Our recommendations are simple:

  • SF33/190 – Great all-round choice for most dog beds.
  • Reflex 400H – Ideal for larger dogs, senior dogs and dogs needing additional support.
  • Vasco 40 Memory Foam – Laminated with Reflex 400H is perfect when maximum comfort and pressure relief are required.
