Futons are a great way to provide a comfortable extra bed for those occasions when family or friends stay over. A foam futon mattress can provide a comfortable night’s sleep and seating for during the day. There are different types of futon and varying styles, but they all need a mattress. Futons were originally a Japanese style of bedding, which was a mattress that could be folded and stored away. This enabled rooms to serve as bedrooms whilst providing living space during the day. The futon was adopted in the western world, sometimes as the same simple fold-over as the original, or with the addition of a wooden or metal frame. The frame would fold to enable the futon to be a sofa during the day and unfold to become a bed at night.

Futons have been popular with households for decades and are widely available, as are new mattresses.  However, a mattress is only as comfortable as the material it is made from. Finding the comfort whilst keeping the fold-over practicality may prove a chore but one way around this is to create your own bespoke foam futon mattress.

How to update your foam futon mattress

As with most replacement foam, using the original mattress to measure as a template is the place to start. The length and width will be the same, however if you are looking to change the comfort then depth and type of foam is where the difference can be made. Start with the depth. A good depth to aim for is 10cm, maybe you wish to go thicker and 12.5cm is also popular. Thicker than this is possible but a word of caution, the foam will still need to easily fold over. The thicker the depth, the more flexible and softer the foam will need to be.

If you are keeping the same dimensions for your foam, your mattress’s cover can be laundered if the fabric allows. Alternatively, a new one can bought or be made, again using the old cover as a template. This is a great opportunity to update your futon’s look. Choose a fabric that isn’t too difficult to sew but will be hard wearing if the futon is to be used regularly as a sofa. If you are increasing the depth of the foam, then a new cover will be needed.

There is a wide variety of foams available, and the choice can sometimes be bewildering. Here at F.C.
